Here is a first look of Joseph Fiennes as Merlin in the upcoming Starz flick Camelot.

Fans of HBO’s “Rome” and epic, lush, well-produced period dramas have a lot to look forward to from Starz, coming in 2011.

The 10 episode Irish-Canadian production of “Camelot” will take a fresh approach to the classic King Arthur story, and the filming is at Ardmore studios, where “The Tudors” and classic film“Excalibur” where both shot.

Yesterday at the last day of the Television Critics Association press tour meeting in Beverly Hills, Starz presented “Camelot’s” star Joseph Fiennes and showrunner Chris Chibnall, piped in via satellite from Ireland to talk about this opulent, star-studded series.

Monsters and Critics noticed James Purefoy in the clip and asked Mr. Chibnall about Purefoy.  Mr. Chibnall confirmed to the TCA that that indeed was James Purefoy as King Lot, described by Mr. Chibnall “as one of the most fearsome villains I’ve ever seen on television and film for a while.”

Fans of Rome remember Mr. Purefoy, called “James Pure Joy” by both Fiennes and Chibnall during the press conference, as Mark Antony, the lover of Atia of the Julii (Polly Walker) who fell for Cleopatra (Lyndsey Marshal), and wound up becoming an enemy of Rome.

Mr. Purefoy is set to add a great deal of interest to a cast that includes Clive Standen as Gawain, Jamie Campbell Bower as King Arthur, Tamsin Egerton as Queen Guinevere,  Joseph Fiennes as Merlin,  Claire Forlani as Queen Igraine, Eva Green as Morgana le Fey and Peter Mooney as Kay.

Mr. Chibnall added that Vincent Regan, Sinéad Cusack and Sebastian Koch are cast in the ensemble as well.

The promotional clip shown at the TCA’s was richly saturated, earthy, more realisitic than “Spartacus” and looked more like a feature film than a TV production, and Monsters and Critics asked Mr. Chibnall about the cinematography.

“What we want here is something filmic. We want something with huge cinematic ambition.  I hope the promo gives you a sense of that.  Our DP is Joel Ransom, who was the DP on ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘Caprica.’ He also did ‘Band of Brothers.’ He is one of the great DP’s in the business, and he has given this a real palette.  We want the richness and vibrancy, and we want a sense of reality to it as well.” Mr. Chibnall added, “We have a great roster of directors as well.”

As for the tone of this Arthur, Mr. Chibnall described it as unlike anything ever seen of the popular legend, and said: “This is an adult drama; I think the great and amazing thing about Camelot is you can talk about political pursuits.  You can talk about great agendas.  You can talk about a King bringing hope to a turbulent kingdom.  But the extraordinary thing in all the versions of Camelot and Arthurian legend is it is all about the romance. It’s all about the passion.   It’s all about great ideals compromised by falling in love with the wrong person and great passions conflicting with…”

Joseph Fiennes finished his sentence: “Sex gets in the way a lot, right?”

“That’s absolutely true,” finished Mr. Chibnall.

As for Fiennes approach to Merlin, the sorcerer who mentors Arthur?  “He is more of a warrior monk and less of a Zen Obi-Wan Gandalf,  I think there’s a duality with Merlin…he fights fire with fire; he drives out a nail with another nail.  He doesn’t turn the other cheek. I don’t think Merlin is a villain, but he is far from driven snow.  I think he is full of Machiavellian machinations…there’s an element of Willy Wonka, Donald Rumsfeld and Obi-Wan to him.”

Camelot star Joseph Fiennes has revealed that magic will play a part in the new Starz drama.

However, the actor – who plays Merlin – admitted that the rise of Arthur will be the main focus of the show.

“The magic lies in the political essences of the piece,” he said. “Yes, there will be dark arts. You’ll see things disappearing and changing shape, but it’s really about the birth of a legend. It’s [about] power [being] given to the wrong individuals, a country split by war and greed… and the assent of a pure king and noble minds.”

He also revealed that he has pictures of Star Wars characters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker on his dressing room wall, explaining that the pair’s relationship is similar to the one shared by Merlin and the young Arthur.

“Merlin is a cross between Obi Wan Kenobi and Donald Rumsfeld,” he claimed.

Fiennes also expressed regret at the cancellation of his previous science-fiction series, the ABC drama FlashForward.

“It was hugely ambitious and it’s sad about it being taken off air for so long,” he said. “We didn’t pull it off.”

Camelot is expected to premiere on Starz early next year.

Not much news going on right now with Joe but will be adding some screen captures soon!

Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly announced that ABC swung its dreaded axe on several new shows recently. Among the canceled series is FlashForward, headlined by Joseph Fiennes.

So the second half of the first season has already aired, but there’s still more to come on FlashForward. Since this is a show about the future, we thought it’d be a good idea to fast-forward time and talk about the finale of the show.

That’s a long way from now though, and by the time the finale airs you’d have forgotten this information. Or not, since what Joseph Fiennes and Sonya Walger have to say isn’t that easy to dismiss.

Possible spoilers below!

On interviews with Collider, actor Joseph Fiennes revealed what we can expect from the finale. As with this upcoming batch of episodes, he says we’re going to get some answers. By the end of the season, we’ll see how the problem of flashforwards will be resolved before other issues can be addressed.

“I think it’s really important that fans get to realize, over and above, the thrilling element of the characters is to get almost a kind of realization or closure on how these flashforwards play out,” the FlashForward star said.

“We’re going really to that moment, to see each and every one of these visions – how they affect and how they finally get results. I think that’s ultimately the goal is to get to that point, to bring a sort of resolution,” Fiennes went on. “Only then can we move on to other issues, other flashforwards.”

As for his co-star and on-screen wife Sonya Walger, she had a few hints about the finale too. For one thing, she wishes to have more scenes with Michael Ealy’s character, Agent Vogel. The two friends starred in Sleeper Cell together and might work on the conclusion of FlashForward’s first season too.

Other than that, the cast haven’t gotten scripts for the season ender, although there are some bits Sonya Walger looks forward to. “There’s the whole resolution to why the flashforwards happen and who’s behind it, who was the man in the stadium . There’s great, satisfying resolves to lots of these big questions,” she said.

“More interesting to me, personally, is the emotional resolve of all these characters set up in these extraordinary situations,” Walger continued. “It really is incredible writing.”

Actor Joseph Fiennes is to get fans’ pulses racing with literary readings in an adult version of Jackanory at www.cartenoire.co.uk. The Hollywood star – who starred in hit series Flash Forward – has been recruited to read scenes from books such as Jane Austen’s Sense And Sensibility. Here are the images of Joseph Fiennes a week before his baby was born on the set for Carte Noire.
